Taicang Port has become a vital hub for China's automobile exports.

Every day, this "bridge across the oceans" continuously ships domestically produced vehicles to all corners of the globe. On average, one out of every ten cars exported from China departs from here. Taicang Port in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province has emerged as a leading hub for China's auto exports, as highlighted during the Vibrant China Research Tour media event.

The Development Journey and Advantages of Taicang Port

Last year, Taicang Port handled nearly 300 million tons of cargo throughput and over 8 million TEUs in container throughput. Its container throughput has ranked first along the Yangtze River for 16 consecutive years and has consistently placed within the top ten nationally for many years. Just eight years ago, Taicang Port was a smaller river port primarily focused on timber trade. At that time, the most common cargoes seen at the port were raw logs and coiled steel, which together accounted for about 80% of its business. Around 2017, as the new energy vehicle industry began to boom, Taicang Port keenly identified this shift and gradually initiated research and layout for vehicle export terminals: the launch of COSCO SHIPPING's dedicated vehicle export route, the world's first "foldable vehicle frame container," and the maiden voyage of a dedicated NEV shipping service.

Innovative Transport Models Enhance Efficiency

The port is responsible for the logistics coordination and on-site execution of "end-to-end vehicle services," including stuffing containers, ocean shipping, unstuffing, and delivering the intact vehicles to the consignee. Taicang Customs has also established a dedicated window for vehicle exports, utilizing "Smart Customs" methods such as an intelligent water transport system and paperless approval to enhance clearance efficiency. Furthermore, Taicang Port serves as an entry point for a variety of imported goods including fruits, grains, aquatic animals, and meat products, boasting comprehensive qualifications across multiple categories.

Today, the construction of the Taicang Port Multimodal Logistics Park is progressing rapidly. The Bosch Asia-Pacific Logistics Center has been officially signed, and projects like the Container Terminal Phase V and Huaneng Coal Phase II are steadily under construction. The total developed shoreline length has reached 15.69 kilometers, with 99 berths built, forming a seamless collection and distribution network integrating "river, sea, canal, highway, railway, and waterway."

In the future, Taicang Port will transition from 'single-point intelligence' to 'collective intelligence.' Automation and intelligent systems will empower operational efficiency, driving growth in container throughput. The port will further enhance its sea-land-air-rail multimodal transport network to provide efficient logistics support for the aggregation and distribution of port resources. Terminal upgrades will elevate capacity levels, while joint marketing efforts will expand the hinterland market. This represents not just a technological upgrade but a leap in development mode, aiming to provide the most solid logistics support for the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Delta and even the entire Yangtze River Economic Belt.
